Beth Grossman, Artist at Large
Beth Grossman's work as a social practice artist uses visual art and participatory performance as an approach to focus attention on the roles we play in nature, interpretation of history and authoritative documents. She designs creative situations to stimulate conversations that question common social beliefs, raise awareness, build community and encourage civic engagement. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, Grossman has collaborated internationally with communities, universities, public parks, corporations, non-profits and museums in the US, Russia, Ukraine, China, Italy, Germany, Mexico, Finland and Norway.
Grossman’s visual art has been shown at venues including: The de Young Museum in San Francisco, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Ellis Island Immigration Museum in New York City, The Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, the Minnesota History Center, The National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia, The Jewish Museum of Florida, The Jewish Community Centers in Manhattan, Minneapolis and San Francisco.
The public conversations prompted by Grossman’s artwork and advocacy have been featured on Chinese, German, US television KRON4 news and National Public Radio’s California Report. Other press includes the Los Angeles Times, New York Times, Miami Herald, Denver Post, San Francisco Chronicle, Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Artist Residencies and guest artist teaching include: the University of the Arts in Helsinki, Finland, Rogaland Kunstsenter in Stavanger, Norway, the American International School in Kuwait, the Guapamacátaro Center for Art and Ecology in Mexico, the Queens Botanical Garden, the de Young Museum in the Kimball Education Center, San Francisco, CA, the International NaturKunst Forum, at the Umweltbildungszentrum in Licherode, Germany, the International Women’s Foundation in Marfa, Texas, Project Kesher International Jewish Women’s conferences in the Ukraine, Russia and Israel. Keepers of the Waters project in Chengdu, China.
She has been awarded grants from the Jerome Foundation, the Avery Arts Foundation, the Peninsula Community Foundation, the Puffin Foundation, the Peninsula Community Foundation and the Paulette Goddard Foundation among others.
Grossman received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Arts degree in Performance Studies from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.
