When a friend asked me to paint portraits of her large family (four kids) I declined except for her fascinating father-in-law. At over 90, he couldn’t sit for long so I used the session to chat & take a few photos. He wore his son’s “fancy coat” & we spoke of India pre-partition and food. His sense of humor was palpable & I couldn’t wait to try to catch that in his expression. Painting this was pure joy.
