I wanted to highlight an environmental activist through artwork and chose Claire Nouvian, who received the Goldman Prize in 2018 for her extraordinary work to prevent deep-sea trawling in France, a type of fishing that destroys everything in its path. She fought against the French supermarket and fleet owner, Intermarché, and in 2012 won the legal battle against them. Since then she has started a non-profit organization, Bloom, and secured a ban on deep-sea trawling from the French government. By 2016, all EU member states had accepted the ban. I think that this portrait helped me better understand the work that she has done and helped educate myself on more environmental issues.
