I met Dan at a framing store in San Francisco. He had worked on a number of my pieces and I always enjoyed our interactions. Dan was highly skilled and sensitive at his work. He is also a sophisticated artist. I had been doing non-commissioned portraits for nearly twenty years and always worked with friends and art world acquaintances. I never worked from photos so I always had people sit for portraits at my Mission District studio. People would essentially hang out with me as they sat for two or three hours and talk about art or bullshit and gossip. Some pals endured 50 or so portraits. I worked relatively quickly to keep it fresh. The quiet time together usually yielded the best results.
