It's not easy to paint a portrait of one's husband. This became very clear as the actual sitting date drew closer & closer. I felt an extra responsibility to make it "good" because I was going to have to live with the consequences when we got home from the studio. But, surprisingly, it turned out to be fun. Why? Because Ed approached it as he approached every experience of his 98 years, with curiosity, energy & a sort of defiance, an "I can make the most of this situation" attitude. I think all those qualities showed up in this portrait &, if I hadn't realized it before, they are the basic characteristics of Ed, his very essence & what makes him so interesting to live with.
