Takin’ Five, “Bishop” Norman Williams, a moment of reflection during the memorial for local jazz legend BJ Papa. Bishop played with Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Max Roach, Sonny Stitts, and John Handy among others. He took the Nickname “Bishop” after playing at San Francisco”s Church of John Coltrane. The story is that he was dating a woman that was deeply religious. Bishop wasn’r a particularly religious person but In order to get on her good side he pretended to be. His friends jokingly started to call him “the Bishop” and the name stuck.
