Alice Neel was still alive when I first discovered her in the early 1980s. Her ability to capture emotionally charged content in her portraits is the main reason I admire her work. Malcolm was one of several close friends who sat for a portrait when I began painting seriously in the early 1980s. A gifted photographer, he also took photos of me and my sister. His ferocious cat Louise was very jealous and insisted on being in the portrait. How could I refuse? I still enjoy drawing from life, although my work has changed from figurative to abstract.
