When I was 10 years old I remember standing in line with my father to see Aristotle Contemplating a Bust of Homer, a recent Rembrandt acquisition by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We also went to view other Dutch Masters that day. I have a vivid recollection of being frightened by the bright red inebriated faces portrayed by Frans Hals. I became fascinated by an artist’s ability to capture not only someone’s physical likeness but also to be able render their state of mind. That ability became an essential goal of my development as an artist.
