I chose to paint Italian environmental activist Rossano Ercolini, who won the Goldman Environmental Prize in 2013. From the small Italian town of Capannori, what started as small-scale protests grew into a national Zero Waste movement. I painted with tempera and used cardboard as the canvas. I chose to paint incinerators being crushed in order to represent his work in getting rid of environmentally harmful incinerators in his area. Creating this portrait was meaningful to me as I was able to shed light on and celebrate one environmental activist out of many that has done monumental work, yet may not be recognized often.
