I was doing an art opening in a building above the setup area for the Oakland Black Joy Parade in 2020, when I saw the Scraper Bike Team practicing below. I had to run down and take some shots! I knew one of the young men that started this team, and that it came from a desire to help kids stay off the streets by channeling creative energy. I wanted to support them. I wasn't sure how they were going to react, but I saw them being delightfully surprised and pleased as they showed off their tricks for me, running straight for the camera then veering off at the last minute. It helped me feel the pride they had in their accomplishments, and it was truly a moment of Black joy.
