This work was inspired by old family photographs of relatives from the Jim Crow South. My great Aunt Annie and her husband William visited San Francisco in the 30s and started my family's migration to the West. As I carefully looked at their faces I felt an accountability and existential bond that motivated me to close the time and space between myself and these ancestors. I kept asking myself what determines who we see and who we remember?
