"Harry" is a depiction of my grandfather. He was a wonderful man—generous, loving, and kind. He supported me in every way, especially my artistic aspirations. He believed in my talent and put me through art school.
I painted this piece as a young student at SFAI. Carlos Villa was my painting instructor and mentor. He taught me not be afraid to express my feelings through my work.
Given Villa’s assignment on portraiture, I knew who I would depict. While painting the piece, I captured my admiration, sense of security, and love that I felt for him. It is a depiction that lives after his death.
Currently, “Harry" hangs in my home where I am reminded of his generous and loving spirit.
