“If we take the world’s enduring religions at their best, we discover the distilled wisdom of the human race.”—Houston Smith, 1993. I grew up in a chaotic Christian home. Seeking to understand the distilled wisdom taught within homes of my subjects practicing ten world religions, I began painting portraits from their family photos. To date, I have painted 234 portraits of 12 families, four: Jewish, Christian, and Muslim families, each of different ethnicities—Asian, African, Latin, and European. I’m currently painting 78 portraits of three Hindus/one Sikh. This extended meditation is titled: The Paradise Project. Every portrait taught me my code of ethics: Earth is home. Humans are family.
