Clarissa Harlowe Barton, known as Clara, is one of the most honored women in American History. Barton risked her life to bring supplies and support to soldiers during the Civil war. As founder of the Red Cross, Clara is considered a visionary who's humanitarian spirit helped change the world. She was a huge influence on my life as a child in the 1960s when there were very few historical women idols. She was tough and kind dealing with male Senators for funding as well as the soldiers in the fields.
