The focus of my life, as an inner-city teacher for thirty years, has been young people. Recently, I began a series of paintings based on images of children clipped from magazines and newspapers. They are a diverse group of faces that remind me of the students that were such an important part of my life. These paintings attempt to capture their beauty, anger, and resilience. Hopefully, the viewer will take a moment to think about these children who have so often been ignored or vilified by the American public. They are assigned to inferior, often dangerous schools, and taught by untrained, underfunded teachers, but some of them still have dreams of achieving a better life.
