During the initial fright and uncertainty of the COVID pandemic, painting a portrait of my sons was establishing a marker. It was also a way of being with them when I could not physically reach out.
The three have always been extremely close, with friendship beyond family ties. Even as their lives matured into separate spheres, they still played together.
The format of the triptych was the most apt concrete expression of the cleft of corona.
Painting is a visual incantation, it summons spirits and crosses space and time. Color can create a unified field. The brush can anchor the displaced. And line can inscribe the life.
While painting, the person can be grasped, held -here-now-together
