For years I have driven by endless fields near Monterey County, California and never ventured further. The people that work these fields remained faceless and anonymous to me. That changed when I met a selfless volunteer at the school where I teach. She is a young woman, a mother of four, and a field worker. Her oldest son was my student. Her days of literally back-bending labor are long, starting at dawn. Yet she generously gave me her time, introducing me to others in the field and allowing me to photograph her with my large format camera.
