My latest series of woodcuts are of African American women artists who sing and play guitar (and other stringed musical instruments) from early 1900s to no end date. I started my research with Sister Rosetta Thorpe (who is considered the Godmother of rock and roll). Next was her mother, Katie Bell Nubin, a gospel singer and mandolin player. Since I’ve made several connections, and by the time I pull a print of one of these fearless women a deeply personal relationship has formed. My goal is to honor these women by bringing them back to life.
