2022

This is a painting of my mother who recently turned 90. I have been spending more time with her recently and trying to get a better understanding of her and of our relationship. She has always been a bit of an enigma to me and I feel an urgency to connect and make peace with some things of the past . Our relationship is complicated: there is a lot of love and a bit of lingering resentment. I think I wanted to portray the hard and the soft of her. So I chose the pink background in contrast with the black sweater. And I think her expression also shows her toughness but not meanness, she's a survivor. It was a good reminder that we are all a product of our history.
