Tabitha, a young friend, had just given birth when I found her nursing her baby alone in a barn at my sister’s farm. It was a beautiful moment and I took photos to hold onto it. The painting of her didn’t come easy. It was painful. A maddening dark creature arrived, trying to grasp at her and take control of her. The struggle and plight of women and my own trauma with motherhood were a dark presence overcoming the work. In the end, seeing Tabitha as a triumphant and brave goddess amongst us helped me to convey the universal beauty, humanity and truth in all women, myself included.
