I chose to paint this picture (which is part of a series) after a difficult summer vacation. Painting this helped me to understand that they were teenagers and were at an age where it is appropriate to not be close to me or even to each other. I had always had an easy rapport with my kids so this period of necessary partial separation I didn't understand until I visually saw it in this watercolor.
