Sambath is the mother of four adult children with whom she escaped the horrors of the Cambodian Civil War between the years 1975 and 1979. She is also my mother-in-law. Here s a depiction of Sambath seated outside in the early morning light. She is looking at me as I study her face. Her eyes tell a story of grief and loss that she lo longer wants to convey through words. It is the story of losing 2 children to execution and starvation and the loss of her husband to famine and disease under the occupation of the Khmer Rouge regime.
