During the pandemic I would a meet a friend in the back yard. We'd sit in old wooden rocking chairs and talk. The two women in this piece never met, but they are connected through me. I wanted to see what would occur between them in the space of a painting. Both have expressive faces and bodies, and while painting them I fall in love all over again. Here, one of them is trying to relate with her "friend", the other with her self(s). In any friendship we are many selves - some shown, some hidden, and new ones unfold in the course of a conversation. The figure on the left grew to look more like me, and I could see that they are both parts of my self - one looking outward, the other, in.
