This is a self portrait. At the time I made this painting I had a job that required a lot of travel. I always felt at home in that red coat. I was playing with the idea of making a portrait that was larger than life and yet hidden from the viewer.
Ironically, several years later and to my great surprise, it was revealed that I had been adopted as an infant…so it can be said this painting is a true picture of where I was at the moment; truly half hidden from myself.
