I grew up in a conservative Mexican-American family in Florida. When I first started seeing photos of Chola culture in Los Angeles in the 70's, I was fascinated. They looked so tough! I loved that these women were rebelling against the traditional feminine "princesa" Latina stereotypes—wearing fierce make-up, men's-style pants and shirts and tattoos . Their hard-edged look reminded me of women in the punk scene. I learned that the Cholas/os were reclaiming and adapting their parents & grandparents pachuco styles and culture.
This portrait isn't of a specific woman, it's my homage to the Cholas of L.A.
