This painting (acrylic with spray paint) is a collaboration by David Johnson and Patrick Cant, and was based on a photograph taken by our friend and coworker José Fajardo when he was covering one of the Northern California wildfires in 2020. We were struck by the mood and placement of the figures, and by their various stances. It was painted as a tribute to firefighters in general, but also honors the inmate volunteer firefighters that work for the various conservation camps. We hope that the painting would help people appreciate the work of firefighters, and draw attention to initiatives being proposed to make it possible for their employment as firefighters after they serve their terms.
