Like many people, we adopted a puppy during COVID. Baby Buster was 8 weeks old when we took him home, a tiny cocker spaniel furball, and he rapidly found his way into our hearts and our lives, demanding our full attention. My son Benny is one of Buster's “primary caregivers,” and in this double portrait you can see the strong connection in the loving gaze Benny directs at Buster, and some of Buster's lovable but intense energy in the piercing, direct gaze with which he confronts the viewer. The somewhat unusual perspective, viewed from above, and the high-keyed colors combine to create an image that suggests the warm, lively, and challenging dynamics at play in our relationships.
