This painting began as a charcoal drawing of a model in my drawing group. When I got home I was struck by the strength and confidence of her gaze. I imagined her to be an immigrant mother raising children to value their contribution to American society, so I surrounded her in colors that reflected Latin culture on a favorite chair from Mexico that was in my studio.
