Misak Pirinjian, proprietor of Tony’s Shoe Repair, is a beloved Mill Valley, CA, figure. His shop is crammed with shoes, purses, watches, luggage—and he knows where everything is. He learned his craft from his father and his workmanship is stellar. The store is like a small-town post office.

I made a portrait of Misak because I admire the way he takes time and care with both objects and people. I wanted to salute him and also the type of craft and business that lends important texture to daily life, yet is disappearing from our neighborhoods and landscapes. Photography allowed me to witness anew Misak’s work, his humor and the rapport he has with everyone who walks through his door.
