More than portraying the physical likeness to someone, this portrait is a vessel to share an emotion. Like most of my work, the image started without preparatory drawings or sketches. Instead, I made random marks and patterns on the canvas and stared for a long time until the edges and form began to appear. Once I saw the woman's face and developed the details, I realized that her expression didn't "make sense" in anatomy. The iteration of her feeling was more like the surreal expression of a cartoon character but closer to the mood I was trying to capture.
