I was photographing an Indigenous group known as the Rama in a small settlement known as Cane Creek. The Rama live in the south eastern portion of Nicaragua along the Caribbean coast; it is estimated that they have occupied this area for over 1,000 years. They are losing more territory every year due to illegal farms and timber harvesting. I was traveling in this area to document the challenges that the Rama face in their attempt to preserve a way of life that is threatened. This mother and her daughter came to the home I was visiting and asked me to photograph them.
