I've never looked at myself for so long in a mirror and on a page. The self portrait allowed me to see a dimension of my personality I didn't quite know was there before, a certain darkness. Suddenly my own face became strange to me in the process of making a self portrait. The process of drawing from life teaches me how to see and what I notice.
