Stefanie Jackson is an African American figure painter and my mom. Though she is too humble to admit it, and I maybe am too stubborn to tell her, my mother provided me with what I think is the best possible upbringing a child could have. As an African American woman raising three children alone, she somehow managed to infuse art and culture into every aspect of our lives. I grew up in Athens, Georgia with a studio/museum for a home, something I did not realize wasn’t normal until I had friends over for sleepovers. Though she never had the “talk” with me explicitly, I now know that everything I needed to know about growing up as a Black woman in America was surrounding me in my mom’s art.
