This image was inspired from a moment while I was a part-time guard at the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas. A man wearing a black sweater and pale pants stood in front of a Rothko near-black painting, and seemed to merge with it.
Years later, perhaps subconsciously anticipating my conversion to Christianity, I imagined a man reaching into the deep mystery/ beyond the veil. Passion flowers look so eerie and mysterious to me. I didn't know when I chose it that 1. they got their name from stamens that look like nails, referring to the nails that pierced Jesus, and 2. It happens to be the model's favorite flower. Dan Linder posed for it - a dentist, and a regular at a café I dined at daily.
