Tafolla began painting after a yearlong study at the National Autonomous University in Mexico City. Born in the Sioux Nation of Nebraska, Tafolla moved to California at the age of 3. Tafolla identifies himself as an indigenous Native American Chicano. His mother Grace, an educator, introduced the young Tafolla to the plight of the California farmworkers and the cause of Cesar Chavez in the 1970s. During his childhood the Tafolla family would travel to Old Mexico searching for cultural identity visiting archaeological sites of their pre-Colombian past.
