I chose to portray Maria Mitchell, an American Astronomer who discovered a comet in 1847 because she is a women I wish I had known. She was a professor of Astronomy at Vassar College and one of our women scientist hero's and role model. Making the portrait helped me to understand her intelligence , patience, and intensity. Through her eyes and I could imagine how each night she starred into the Cosmos peering through a telescope in darkness night after night.
