My mother-in-law, Hilda, was an electrical engineer and a fun and loving mother. She was a perfectionist who never left the house without looking her best. In her final evening, she became agitated and restless. She lost consciousness in her last hours and during this time, I whispered to her to let go. A tear rolled down her cheek and within a half hour, she was gone. Dementia is cruel as it completely changes a person and impacts those around them. I felt like I lost her twice. I felt angry about the dignity that was slowly stripped away from her. As a means for me to deal with her passing in November 2021, I have poured my efforts into restoring her dignity through these portraits.
