In my portrait work, it’s common for me to return to the same faces over and over, often with years or decades between sittings. I know these faces well, and I've come to realize that what I see is an odd amalgam of who is in front of me in the moment blended with what I recall—my memories of their younger selves, my sense of who they are and have been.

The process of seeing these familiar faces in that deep way that portrait painting requires is a way of taking in who the person has become while I maintain the awareness that I hold in my mind’s eye all people they have been.
