Centering queer people and people of color and their power, joy, and strength is something we need more of in the world and in the history books. Gabriel stands strong without breaking the gaze of the viewer in his full power. His gentle eyes and striking features welcome the viewer into his world while the sharp message on his t-shirt makes his values clear. Painting Gabriel allowed me to dig deep into his choices of wardrobe, setting, and overall mood based on the reference photo over which Gabriel had full control over. I wanted the narrative to be guided by Gabriel because it is his story that I am helping to share.
