I was standing with my friend, Walker, and his girlfriend in a parking lot, at night, smoking. I was struck by how stunning Walker and his girlfriend looked in their outfits, and how beautifully the light coming from the moon and inside a nearby shop illuminated them. I painted this scene from imagination, as I remembered my friends and the surrounding environment. Walker was the center of attention while his girlfriend, whose name is never revealed, like Curly’s wife from Of Mice and Men, stood quietly with a Mona Lisa smile for most of the night. Painting this picture reminded me of how little has changed, socially, since Steinbeck’s time.
