I decided to choose myself as the subject of my first painted portrait. My goal was to recreate myself as realistically as possible. I choose to represent myself on an all black background so the main focus would be the face. I felt that by using myself as the subject, I could be hyper-critical of every detail while working in a new creative medium. For example, I’d be able to tell if something was slightly off because it was my own face that I was painting. What I learned during the painting process was to just relax and be patient. I wrestled with a lot of self doubts while working on this, as I’m sure a lot of artist do, and was quite happy with the final product.
