The African American Painter is a self-portrait based in the study of anatomy and the visual telescoping references of Aaron Douglas, while under the watchful eyes of Lois Mailou Jones and Henry Ossawa Tanner. Making this drawing helped me understand my place in relationship to the African American painters who came before me.
