While I painted this person my relationship with them evolved, and consequently the painting did as well. I repainted the background several times until I landed on the post-apocalyptic dusky scene as a backdrop. I wanted to represent this person who had experienced an identity shift into motherhood in a landscape that appears to be shifting identities as well. As I painted her and tried to connect with this experience of giving birth, something I have never done, I realized that there is a limbo a pregnant person inhabits before seeing who they will become after delivering and how her opinions and views on the world might change with new life.
