During the pandemic I joined a group of artists to draw and paint from a Washington D.C. model on zoom every 2 weeks. Without live models, I had already made 62 IMAGINARY Portraits on an ipad and posted them on social media. So Kenyatta Ali, our fascinating zoom model, is the only "real" person I've painted during the pandemic. This portrait is the first in which biomorphic shapes unfamiliar to me emerged. In one new piece, sound is represented by such shapes. There is something in Kenyatta that has connected me to a nonobjective universe that now appears in my work. Nonverbal communication and close scrutiny ..Is this a muse?
