This portrait photograph is one from a series of 60 random Americans. I photographed each person by having him/her/their selves standing in front of an all white background. I wanted to capture the essence of a people, Americans. The work revealed an American identity.
Non-Europeans, like Ray depicted here, confirmed to me that whenever he was asked: where are you from?, and after answering San Francisco Bay Area, too often, he gets asked again: no, where are you ‘really’ from?
