This is actually a drawing from a photo of myself when I was young. I found out later in life that this was a particularly challenging time for this young vulnerable girl. When I found a photo of this girl at that age and as #metoo came into the public forum, I wanted to show what she went through in picture instead of words. I felt so seen and understood as a human and as a fellow artist when I saw Alice Neel's work and her vision and message. Just as she captured the essence of her subjects with great empathy and humanism when she drew or painted them, I too wanted to capture the raw essence of this brave little girl who survived too much at a young age.
